M1 Compatibility
The mid-size Tune M1 fits the Ford Ranger. It fits the 5' bed Ranger (2019–present) and the 6' bed Ranger (2019–2023 only). The 2024+ new-gen Ranger ships only with the 5' bed across both cab options.
The Ranger is capable of running the M1, but its payload numbers deserve some skepticism. The headline figures look decent — often 1,500–1,600 lbs on common trims — but community experience suggests the margin gets tighter once you account for accessories and real-world options. Data on the Ranger is thinner than on the Tacoma or F-150, so check your specific door sticker and don't rely on forum estimates.
Check your door sticker and use the payload calculator to model your full build. On a Ranger, leave no assumptions in your budget. Account for everything.
Cab + Bed: The Decision That Shapes Your Build
The Ranger's cab and bed options changed meaningfully between the 2019–2023 generation and the 2024+ new-gen redesign. Both setups affect under-platform storage and rear-seat usability differently.
2019–2023 SuperCab + 6' Bed
Extended cab with rear-hinged half-doors and a small jump seat. Comes only with the 6' bed. This is the M1-friendliest Ranger config: real bed length for stowing gear under the platform, lighter than the SuperCrew, and the best payload margin in the older lineup. Good for couples and solo campers who want room for gear.
2019–2023 SuperCrew + 5' Bed
Full 4-door cab with usable rear seating, but only the 5' bed. Most popular Ranger config off the lot. The M1 platform extends past the bed and you lose meaningful storage under the platform — manageable but the most compromised Ranger config for an M1 build.
2024+ New-Gen Ranger (SuperCab or SuperCrew + 5' Bed)
The redesigned Ranger ships with the 5' bed across both cab options. Slightly larger overall than the previous gen, with payload that varies more by trim. The SuperCab is rare; most new-gen Rangers are SuperCrews. Either way, the short bed means an M1 build needs disciplined under-platform storage planning.
Quick decision frame
Best M1 Ranger to buy used: 2019–2023 SuperCab + 6' bed in XL trim — biggest bed, lightest config, best payload margin. If you need 4 doors: any SuperCrew works, but expect to manage payload and storage carefully.
Ford Ranger Payload by Trim
Approximate community-sourced ranges. Ranger payload data is thinner than Tacoma or F-150. Treat these as directional estimates. Always verify with your specific door sticker.
| Trim | Approx. Door Sticker Range | M1 Build Verdict | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| XL (2019–2023) | ~1,600–1,860 lbs | ✓ Best Ranger Margin | Lightest trim. Best payload option in the Ranger lineup. |
| XLT (2019–2023) | ~1,500–1,700 lbs | ⚠ Workable | Common trim. Doable but leaves limited margin. Build lean. |
| Lariat (2019–2023) | ~1,400–1,600 lbs | ⚠ Tight | Heavier from factory. Careful payload management required. |
| Tremor (2021–2023) | ~1,400–1,550 lbs | ⚠ Tight | Off-road equipment adds weight. Build even leaner. |
| Raptor (2021+) | ~1,200–1,400 lbs | ✗ Very Tight | Performance hardware makes the Raptor the heaviest Ranger. Very limited margin. |
| 2024+ Ranger (new gen) | ~1,500–1,900 lbs | ⚠ Varies | Larger new-gen Ranger. Payload varies significantly by config. Check your sticker. |
Ranger vs. Tacoma: The Payload Reality
The Ranger and Tacoma are the two most popular mid-size trucks in the M1 ecosystem. If you're choosing between them for M1 use and payload is a priority, the honest comparison:
The Tacoma generally offers more payload in comparable trims, particularly at the middle and upper ends of each lineup. The Ranger's advertised max payload is competitive, but real-world sticker numbers often show less margin than expected, especially with options. Tacoma trims also tend to be better represented in the M1 community, meaning there's more collective data on real-world builds.
None of this rules out the Ranger. Many Ranger owners run the M1 successfully, it just requires building leaner and knowing your specific sticker number.
Realistic Payload Budget: Ranger + M1
| Item | Weight | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 100Ah LiFePO4 battery | ~26 lbs | LiFePO4 saves ~30 lbs vs. AGM, critical on a Ranger |
| Mattress (3" foam) | ~12 lbs | Go thinner if payload is tight; saves 6+ lbs vs. 4" |
| 5 gal fresh water | 42 lbs | Start with 5 gal on a Ranger; scale up if you have margin |
| Camper gear & accessories | ~40 lbs | Be disciplined. Ranger doesn't forgive gear creep. |
| Driver | ~175 lbs | Use actual weight |
| Passenger | ~150 lbs | If applicable |
| Cab gear | ~20 lbs | Keep it lean |
| Full fuel tank (18 gal) | 113 lbs | 6.3 lbs/gal × 18 gal |
| Subtotal (everything except the M1) | ~578 lbs | Lean build — what loads onto the truck before the camper |
| Tune M1 (base, mid-size) | ~400 lbs | Dry weight, no gear (Tune spec) |
| Grand total (with M1) | ~978 lbs | What you're actually putting on the truck |
On a Ranger with a 1,600 lb door sticker, that's ~622 lbs of headroom — but only with this lean build. Add more water, a second passenger, or a heavier battery and that number shrinks fast. On a Raptor at 1,300 lbs, you're already at 322 lbs of margin and have to keep it lean. Use the calculator for your exact configuration.
Ranger-Specific Tips
- LiFePO4 is not optional on a Ranger. The ~30 lb savings vs. AGM for a 100Ah battery is meaningful at this payload level.
- Start with less water, add more once you know your margin. 5 gallons is a practical starting point; expand if your sticker gives you room.
- Skip the steel bumpers and heavy armor. The payload math doesn't have room for it on a Ranger.
- The Ranger Raptor's off-road capability comes at a steep payload cost. If you're Raptor-curious but M1-focused, the tradeoff is real.
- Bed length support: The mid-size M1 fits the 5' bed Ranger (2019–present) and the 6' bed Ranger (2019–2023 only). The 2024+ Ranger is 5' bed only.
- Share your sticker data. The Ranger community is smaller and underrepresented in M1 discussions. If you have a Ranger build, posting your door sticker number and actual setup helps other owners who are working off thinner data.
